[tambour] Sada Bhavani, Dahini, je me présente à toi, Ô dieu Ganesh, ô cinq dieux, protégez-moi, Brahma, Vishnu, Maheswar, ô roi.

grand’mère, Bhiya l’a détruite.
A Satsari
“Then our Satsari Katyur’s will be yellow and white.

[drums] [INVOCATION] Sada Bhavani, Dahini, je me présente à toi, O god Ganesh, O five gods, may the five gods protect me, Brahma, Vishnu, Mahewar, O king. [drum] Revered as a guru, welcome as a friend, free as a bird in the sky, vast as the earth, like Ramcandra in Ceylon, faithful as Sita, wise as Birbal, pure as the musk-deer, warlike as Bhimsen, devout as Shiva, sage as the king’s council, king and minister — king who loves his people, who protects the law and subdues the powerful, salutation to such a king! Foolish as a child, greedy as a swan, stubborn as a tooth, fated as the forehead, pilgrim like the wind, soothing pain like the Ganges. What water? What force? Water of the Ganges, force of a brother. What water of the Ganges? What force of a brother? Water of the monsoon, force of the soul. What debt? What disgust? Debt of service, disgust of amrit. Ô king! [drum][END of the invocation] [drums] Ya ho! Yield, Chhiya, yield the way! I am Kumauni of Kumaun! I have come! yield the way! — A hero who yields the way, what kind of hero is that, sir? An ascetic who yields the sacred fire, what kind of ascetic is
that? A brahman who yields the altar, what kind of brahman is that,
sir? A warrior who yields the way, what kind of warrior is that,
sir? O, if my body is cut off, I offer my head; I’ll not yield the
way. If my head is cut off, I offer my body; I’ll not yield the
way. You yield, then, Kumauni warrior! He didn’t yield. O, sire, at that time, Bikram Chand, the crafty king, sire, of Kumaun of
the twenty-two kingdoms, having set forth with his army, arrived saying, “I will go to
Satsari Katyur!” sire. And Chhiya Kathayat, younger brother of Bhiya Kathayat of Satsari
Katyur, came forth saying “I will go to Kumaun of the twenty-two kingdoms!” They met, sire, halfway, sire, on the heights of Pattharlek, sire. At
that point, the crafty king of Kumaun, sire, Bikram Chand, said: “Yield the way, warrior Chhiya, yield the way! I have come from Kumaun,
yield the way!” he said, and then, Chhiya Kathayat replied, sire: “What kind of warrior yields the
way? What kind of ascetic, sire, gives up his sacred fire? What brahman
gives up the veda? What kind of warrior, he said, sire, yields the way? So, if my head is cut off, I offer my body; if my body is cut off, I
offer my head; I’ll not yield the way.” When he had spoken, when, sire, the king of Kumaun of the twenty-two kingdoms, sire,
engaged his army against Satsari Katyur, sire, at Pattharlek, sire, from below, from
above, how, sire, was the battle of the paddy-walls [MG: the terrifying battle]
joined… [drum] Sire, from below, from above, the battle of the paddy-walls was
joined, from below, from above Sire, from below, from above, the battle of the paddy-walls was
joined, from below, from above Sire, from below, from above, the battle of the paddy-walls was
joined, from below, from above Sire, hand-to-hand combat breaking bones, breaking bones Sire, combat grasping the topknot, the topknot Sire, combat brought to the knees, to the knees Sire, rivers of blood flowed, rivers of blood Sire, rivers of blood flowed, rivers of blood Sire, there was the crackle of gunfire, the crackle of
gunfire Sire, there was a deluge of arrows, a deluge of arrows Sire, like the flash of lightning in the sky, lightning in the
sky Sire, so struck the sabre by Chhiya’s hand, by Chhiya’s hand Sire, so struck the sabre by Chhiya’s hand, by Chhiya’s hand Sire, so struck the sabre by Chhiya’s hand, by Chhiya’s hand Sire, he cut down ten of the enemy, he disabled twenty, he cut down
ten Sire, he cut down ten of the enemy, he disabled twenty, he cut down
ten Sire, he cut down twenty of the enemy, he disabled thirty, he cut down
twenty Sire, he cut down thirty of the enemy, he disabled thirty, he cut down
thirty Sire, he cut down ten of the enemy, he disabled twenty, he cut down
ten Sire, he cut down ten of the enemy, they were offered to Kalika, he
cut down ten Sire, he cut down ten of the enemy, they were offered to Kalika, he
cut down ten Sire, he cut down thirty of the enemy, they were offered to Bhairav,
he cut down thirty Sire, he cut down thirty of the enemy, they were offered to Bhairav,
he cut down thirty Sire, he cut down thirty of the enemy, they were offered to Bhairav,
he cut down thirty O, sire, back then, sire, at Pattharlek, sire, when the battle between
the armies of Chhiya Kathayat and the crafty king Bikram Chand of Kumaun of the twenty-two
kingdoms raged, in the end, sire, when the armies were led there, il [Chhiya Kathayat]
killed ten of the enemy and disabled twenty; he killed twenty and disabled thirty, he
killed thirty, sire, and disabled twenty. He killed ten and offered them to Kalika; he killed twenty and offered
them to Malika; he killed thirty and offered them to Bhairav. When he was about to finish off the army [of Kumaun], the crafty king
Bikram Chand said “Why, he’s going to get me in the end!” And the crafty king Bikram Chand fired his double-barrelled gun at Chhiya
Kathayat, sire, and killed him. After killing him, the crafty king Bikram Chand made the remains of the
army of Satsari Katyur his own and made for Satsari Katyur, sire, to loot and
plunder. The army of the crafty king Bikram Chand went to Satsari
Katyur. Bhiya Kathayat, the elder brother of Chhiya Kathayat, was in chains in
Kumaun of the twenty-two kingdoms. His irons weighed nine maund [720 pounds]. At night he had a dream: Chhiya Kathayat appeared in his elder brother
Bhiya Kathayat’s dream. “O my brother Bhiya Kathayat — may you die eating the broth of your
lineage! — because my elder brother Bhiya was in Kumaun of the twenty-two kingdoms, I
brought the army from Satsari Katyur. At Pattharlek I met the army of the crafty king Bikram Chand. During the battle I did many things. I killed half of the enemy for you, and half for myself. In the end, the crafty king Bikram Chand killed me with a shot from his
gun, and he set out for our Satsari Katyur. Who knows what he has done there! That is what happened, brother.” At this, Bhiya Kathayat awoke; it was
first light [sign of the dream’s veracity]. Bhiya Kathayat was in irons that weighed nine maund. At this moment,
sire — at this moment, sire, Bhiya Kathayat said, “By Narayan! — die eating
the broth of your lineage! — while I, Bhiya Kathayat, am chained here in Kumaun of the
twenty-two kingdoms, my younger brother Chhiya has been killed, and Satsari Katyur has been plundered. When I came here, sire, I left home at an auspicious moment, I
sacrificed thousands of goats to Bhavani, I offered a feast to brahmans. Either Gurelimata is angry, sire, or else it’s Annamata and Dhanamata
— the irons on my arms and legs are broken!” When Bhiya Khatayat said this, sire, Naudurga Bhavani possessed
him. Gurelimata possessed him, sire, and the palace of the crafty king
Bikram Chand was split in four parts. The nine-maund irons were broken. When the irons were broken, and Bhiya Kathayat, sire, was about to
come out from that place, sire, the crafty king Bikram Chand’s queen said: “O Bhiya, I have a request, I have a request.” [Returning to a slightly earlier event:] Then, sire, the servant-girl
of the crafty king Bikram Chand said: “O grandmother — die eating the broth of your lineage! — this Bhiya
has broken the nine-maund irons and is about to lay waste Kumaun of the twenty-two
kingdoms.” Then, sire, in what way did the servant-girl of the crafty king Bikram
Chand, sire, advise the queen, speaking from the heart, sire, like a loyal
daughter… [drum] O, alas he is gone, he has broken his tether, Bhiya has destroyed it,
grandmother He has broken the western wall, Bhiya has destroyed it,
grandmother He has broken the southern chains, Bhiya has destroyed them,
grandmother He has cut down the watchdog, Bhiya has killed it,
grandmother He has killed the crowing cock, Bhiya has killed it,
grandmother Bhiya has destroyed them, Bhiya has killed them, grandmother O, sire, at that moment, sire, the servant-girl said, “Bhiya destroyed
it, grandmother, Bhiya destroyed it. He has broken the yard to the east, she said, sire, he has broken the
bolt to the west, He has broken the chains to the south, Bhiya has destroyed them, he
has killed the barking watchdog, he has killed the crowing cock. Bhiya has destroyed all this, grandmother,” she said. “O Bhiya, whatever else you do, I, the queen, have a request
[restriction ?].” “By Narayan, [die eating the broth of your lineage] I am full of anger
at your crafty king Bikram Chand, and in the end you ask me a favor,” he said, sire, and he returned to his own Satsari Katyur. When he reached Satsari Katyur, sire, there was no one, sire, at
Satsari Katyur.. The tiger-king Biramdeu had hidden in the forest out of fear. At
Satsari Katyur, sire, there was not even a fly. But from here to Kumaun of the twenty-two kingdoms, Bhiya Kathayat,
sire, ranged over hills and valleys, over hillsides and cliffs, sire, and he gathered
them all together from one side, sire, and another. He gathered them together, sire, in his own Satsari Katyur. Now he said to the crafty king Bikram Chand— euh,
to the tiger-king Biramdeu: “O king, tiger-king Biramdeu — die eating the broth of your lineage! —
don’t worry. You have lost a needle, I will restore a crowbar. They have taken a thousand rupees of your property, I will restore a
hundred thousand. Go to your palace, have no fear!” — “O Bhiya — die eating the broth of your lineage! — if you had been
in my house, how would we have come to such a pass? You didn’t listen, and while you were gone to Kumaun of the twenty-two
kingdoms all this happened.” “Never mind, I have broken the nine-maund irons and come
back. Who is it who put me in nine-maund irons? It’s the crafty king Bikram
Chand. I have broken the nine-maund irons and come back, have no fear,” he said, sire, and he gathered everyone at Satsari Katyur. Then Bhiya Kathayat said, sire, “What is the uniform of Kumaun of the
twenty-two kingdoms like?” “The uniform of Kumaun of the twenty-two kingdoms is green and black,
they are dressed in green and black,” he replied.
blanc. Make them yellow and white.” he said, and prepared the army of Satsari Katyur He himself dressed as an ascetic and went where the army of the crafty
king Bikram Chand was waiting; he went there, sire, disguised as an ascetic. When he went there, they had been fasting for seven days without food
or drink. Bhiya Kathayat, disguised as an ascetic, cried out “Alms!” to beg for
alms. “O jogi, we’ve gone hungry for seven days and seven nights, what alms
are you begging for!” “Oh dear, why are you going hungry?” “We can’t eat. We don’t know when the enemy will come so we stay
hungry.” — “Nonsense! It's your home!" Come, get organized to eat and drink! Give me your arms and clothes,
everything. Eat your fill. Don’t worry about a thing!” — “O, we haven’t found an ascetic, we’ve found a father!” — “All right, let us be, we’ll eat now,” they said, and the whole
army, sire, made fires on both banks of the river, sire, and started making
food. Bhiya Kathayat put the stocks of their guns, sire, in the coals of a
fire, he put the bows and arrows in the coals, he tied broom-knots in their
clothes and made them useless. The moment they said “Let’s eat!” and put handfuls of food in their
mouths — he had already destroyed their arms — when they were putting food in their mouths, he gave the order, “To
arms!” and the army of Satsari Katyur rushed forward. When Satsari Katyur rushed forward, the soldiers of Kumaun of the
twenty-two kingdoms looked for their arms — everything was in the coals. “Let’s get dressed!” they said, sire, but there were broom-knots in
their clothes and they pulled at them every which way. At this point, sire, the men of Satsari Katyur arrived, sire, in the
rice-paddies, sire, and now, sire, how did the destruction of the army of Kumaun of the
twenty-two kingdoms begin… [drum] Ya ho! Sire, don’t strike the whites, not one, the whites, Sire, don’t strike the whites, not one, the whites, Sire, don’t spare the blacks, not one, the blacks, Sire, don’t spare the blacks, not one, the blacks, Sire, don’t spare the blacks, not one, the blacks, Sire, don’t strike the yellows, not one, the yellows, Sire, don’t strike the yellows, not one, the yellows, Sire, don’t spare the greens, not one, the greens, As the lightning in the sky, sire, as in the sky, So in Bhiya’s hand the sword struck, sire So in Bhiya’s hand the sword struck, sire There was the crackle of gunfire, sire, of gunfire There were downpours of arrows, sire, of arrows, Rivers of blood flowed, sire, of blood, Rivers of blood flowed, sire, of blood. [drum] O, sire, then, sire, they destroyed, sire, the army, sire, of Kumaun
of the twenty-two kingdoms. “Don’t spare anyone in green colors, he said, sire, dont spare anyone
in green! Don’t strike anyone, he said, sire, in white, don’t strike anyone, he
said, sire, in yellow! [drum] The gunshots, sire, crackled, the arrows, sire, rained
down. Rivers, sire, of blood flowed.
Like lightning in the sky, sire, Bhiya’s sword struck and destroyed
the army of Kumaun of the twenty-two kingdoms. [drum] Only the crafty king Bikram Chand, sire, remained. “By Narayan [die eating the broth of your lineage], I would have ended
your life. but when I came, sire, the queen made a request; it was
granted. Only your life must be spared.” he said, sire, and he broke one arm and turned it behind his
back, he broke the other arm, sire, and turned it behind his back, sire, he
tore out his ears, he put out his eyes, sire, he tore out his tongue. [drum] He left him only his breath for speech, and in that state he
took him, sire, to Satsari Katyur. He had the tiger-king Biramdeu, sire, dress up and made him the
horseman, and he made the crafty king Bikram Chand his horse; then, sire, at
Satsari Katyur, sire, putting seven buffalo skins on his back, finally he said, “Now go,
crafty king Bikram Chand, go to your Kumaun of twenty-two kingdoms!” he said, sire, and then, sire, all through the kingdom of Bhiya
Kathayat, sire, vast as the sea, in what way did they weep… [drum] Ya ho! May the memory of the brave warrior live on, his fame is for
the four eras. He respected the request of [queen] Phulhari, for a hundred thousand
years. In what era was the battle, in what era is his fame? The battle occurred in the Golden Age, his fame is for the four
eras.
