2. Grand-roi ! En ce temps-là, dit-on, grand-roi, Rani Rāut alla du fort de Kolāuli à Kumāongaḍā pour faire faire un justaucorps de taffetas et une ceinture [*brodée], il alla au Kumāon pour cela{{1}}.
3. Il s’en fut après avoir placé Jhagaḍuwā chez lui.
4. Les jours passèrent, les mois passèrent, [et la mère de Rani Rāut se dit] : « Jusqu’aujourd’hui, nul courrier de mon Raniyā, nul message, nulle feuille de papier ne [me] sont parvenus. »
5. Sa mère Bairāgi rongeait son frein. Dans le village— « Qu’y a-t-il ? — Oh, rien »— il y avait un notable.
6. L’ayant appelé, elle dit : « Eh, petit père ! Meurs donc en buvant ton brouet, voici douze ans que mon fils est parti. »
7. « Un jour, pourriez-vous venir écrire une lettre pour moi, afin de lui dire les nouvelles de la maison ? ». [Le notable] écrivit la lettre pour elle.
8. Elle appela son perroquet messager. Sur la feuille de papier, que fait-elle écrire ?…

10. [récitatif] O grand-roi ! A ce moment-là, Rani Rāut était allé à Asām aux vingt-deux-Kumāon pour se faire faire un justaucorps de taffetas une ceinture [brodée].
11. Douze années avaient passé sans qu’aucune lettre n’arrive, sans qu’aucun message ne vienne. « Je dois lui montrer l’état de sa maison », elle disait ainsi.
12. Comme la mère Bairāgi ne pouvait pas rester ainsi, elle appela un notable de son village, et il écrivit la feuille de papier pour elle.
13. « Petit ! Puisses-tu prospérer, mon joli fils Raniyā, le ṭikā à ton front et l’étoffe à ton turban ! Que faire, comment faire ? Tu as perdu tout attachement pour ton foyer. Toi, parti là-bas, sois en repos ! » 
14. Il écrivit sur la feuille de papier: « Ta mère Bairāgi Silā reste prostrée dedans, s’habille de toile d’orties, mange de la balle de riz. »
15. « Dans le plat où tu mangeais, c’est Jhagaḍuwā qui mange ; sur le lit où tu dormais, c’est Jhagaḍuwā qui dort ; les habits que tu mettais, c’est Jhagaḍuwā qui les porte. »
16. « Le hoquet qui te fait trembler te vient de moi, ta mère Bairāgi Silā». Ainsi dit-elle, o grand-roi, et il l’écrivit sur la feuille.
17. Pendant qu’il écrivait, elle appela le perroquet messager qu’elle avait apprivoisé.
18. Une fois la lettre [glissée sous son] aile, le perroquet parvint au Kumaon-aux-vingt-deux[-royaumes].
19. Auprès d’une plate-forme de repos plantée d’un pipal, l’oiseau chante en faisant :‘Cui cui cui cui !’.
20. Rani Rāut, ayant pris congé, parvint à cette plate-forme de repos plantée d’un pipal.
21. En arrivant, il regarde vers le ciel : l’oiseau chantait. « Eh là petit ! Qu’es-tu, à qui es-tu ? Meurs donc en buvant ton brouet, si tu es mon perroquet apprivoisé, viens donc par ici. Si tu es un perroquet sauvage, envole-toi ! »
22. Le perroquet, dans un bruissement d’ailes, vola vers lui, ô grand-roi.
23. Il jette un œil sous l’aile du perroquet, il ouvre la feuille de papier, la regarde et il se dit : « C’est pour moi ». Il lisait la missive.
24. Tandis qu’il lisait, grand-roi, ses yeux virèrent au rouge vif, son œil au noir profond, son visage à l’écarlate et au roussi. [Il dit]: « Maintenant que faire, comment faire ? Si tu étais [ici], j’enfilerais tes sept côtes inférieures et tes sept côtes supérieures en un collier de quatorze côtes ! Je ferais des brochettes avec ta cervelle, je t’arracherais la viande avec mes ongles ! Que faire, comment faire ? Meurs donc en buvant ton brouet ! ». Tremblement de chien, tremblement de malheur, frisson de fureur !
25. Il démissionna de ses fonctions en Kumaon. Cela fait, il arriva chez lui. Il atteignit sa demeure, au fort de Kolāuli.
26. Lorsqu’il arriva, la reine sortit pour lui laver les pieds. Elle dit : «Je vais te laver les pieds ! » — [mais] elle venait en portant un pot de ghee, grand-roi !
27. Lui laver les pieds, disait-elle ! Avec du ghee ! « Meurs donc en buvant ton brouet, mais pourquoi trembles-tu, qu’y a-t-il ? — Tu laves mes pieds avec un pot de ghee ! — Oh là là ! Je me suis trompée. Je vais en chercher un autre ! »
28. Et elle arrive avec le pot de miel. Au moment de l’apporter, la femme se confondit en salutations : « Beau seigneur, grand, prospère, adorable, ta femme, etc. — Mais que se passe-t-il, comment cela se fait-il ? Apporte donc de l’eau et lavons ces pieds ! »
29. Elle dit : « O grand-roi ! Comment ai-je pu perdre ainsi la raison ?! ». Elle apporte de l'eau et lui lave les pieds, puis elle rentre.
30. Dedans, le boire et le manger étaient prêts. Crépitement des beignets, des gâteaux et des galettes, dix-huit sortes de mets dans neuf plats de feuilles, saveurs dans la bouche du mangeur, grand-roi, fumets sur ses mains ! Grand-roi, elle avait préparé dix-huit sortes de mets dans neuf plats de feuilles.
31. Elle servit le festin à Rani Rāut.
32. Elle disposa deux plats, se mit à servir le festin.
33. « Eh ! Meurs donc en buvant ton brouet ! Je suis seul à manger ! Pourquoi as-tu mis là le festin dans deux plats ? — Ce n’est rien, mon roi, dit-elle, ces temps-ci il y a un esprit dans les greniers, il y a un esprit dans les greniers, voyez-vous ! C’est pour lui, voilà tout ! »
34. Il mangea et il but, il lissa sa moustache et rota comme un tigre.
35. Une portion du festin reposait sur la jarre à grains et celui qui était dedans en mangea. « Celui qui mange de ce festin, qu’il avale aussi du feu ! » [dit] Rani Rāut, et il saisit une pince et lui donna du feu à manger.
36. Après lui avoir fait avaler du feu, [il dit] : « Qu’il boive aussi de l’eau ! », et Rani le fit boire.
37. Grand-roi ! Ayant brûlé et arrosé sa pelure, il en fit comme un rat !
38. Ecoutez ! [Rani Rāut], [furieux] comme un tigre, saisit le toupet de la chevelure [de Jhagaḍuwā et il dit] : «Meurs donc en buvant ton brouet ! Je suis parti en te laissant prendre soin de ma maison et mener paître mes bêtes ! ». Il saisit son sabre d’une main. « De qui vais-je trancher la tête ? » dit-il, et voici de quelle sorte Jhagaḍuwā se met à supplier…

41. [Récitatif] Alors Rani Rāut, lui attrapant la chevelure, soulève Jhagaḍuwā. [Celui-ci] écarquille les yeux [et se dit] : « Maintenant finis les libres ébats ! Ma chance a tourné ! Voici venue l’heure de ma mort ! »
42. Son cœur battait à tout rompre. «Grand frère ! Ne me tue pas ! Je garderai tes bufflonnes sur les hauteurs, je moudrai pour toi au moulin à eau, je serai ton cheval dans les raidillons, je ferai tes tâches ingrates, mais ne me tue pas, grand frère ! », dit-il, grand-roi.
43. Rani Rāut [répondit] : « Ah ! tu as raison, vieux. Que faire, comment faire ? Pour une traînée, je devrais trancher tes souffles, mais qu’est-ce que j’y gagnerais ? Allez, va, je te la laisse, cette traînée, et qu’on n’en parle plus. »
44. Et le jour soudain de poindre, le givre de givrer, la longe à bestiaux de se libérer, et sur l’aire commune les procès de procéder ; les âtres s’allumèrent.
45. Les âtres s’allumèrent et l’on s’éveilla. On dit : « Il y a dans l’étable un bouc ayant gagné vingt-deux deux combats, amenons-le ! ». On conduit le bouc ayant gagné vingt-deux combats sur l’aire de battage et de pressage, et on le tranche.
46. Et ils devinrent frères-par-le-testicule, ils coupèrent les testicules, ils mangèrent ensemble toute la viande, ils devinrent frères-par-le-testicule.{{3}}
47. [Rani Rāut dit] : « Jhagaḍuwā, le jour où je serai seul tu devras veiller sur moi, le jour où il y a aura quelque corvée, tu y pourvoiras, dit-il. Tu es devenu [mon] frère-par-le-testicule »
48. Une fois devenus frères rituels, Rani Rāut lui abandonna tout ce qui était en sa possession.
49. Rani Rāut prit l’habit de yogi, (…)
il se fabriqua une pince longue de sept coudées, il prit un pot à eau, et se mit à errer de village en village.{{4}}
50. Errant de village en village, il parvint au fort de Kolāuli, chez sa belle-famille, à son ancienne maison maritale.
51. Il s’était installé sur une plate-forme de repos sous un pipal. C’est alors qu’arrive sa belle-sœur Bhimlaḍā Udā.
52. Sur la plate-forme de repos, elle [le] regarde de haut en bas, [et elle se dit :] « Je regarde son front, il ressemble à mon beau-frère… Je regarde le bout de son nez, il ressemble à mon beau-frère… Je regarde le poignet de sa main gauche, il ressemble à mon beau-frère… Serait-ce lui ? Comment est-ce possible ? » Ainsi se disait-elle, grand-roi. « Lécheur de plats, serviteur du narguilé, hirsute aux crânes, qui es-tu, d’où viens-tu ? En voyant ton allure, j’ai comme l’impression que tu ressembles à mon beau-frère. Qui serais-tu d’autre ? »
53. « — Personne d’autre ! Oui, c’est bien moi, ton beau-frère Rani Rāut. »
54. « Ça alors ! Te voilà ! Très bien ». De retour chez elle, ses beaux-parents firent un présent au gendre{{5}} et lui dirent :
55. « Ah ! Petit ! Aujourd’hui nous célébrons notre gendre Rani Rāut ». Ils préparèrent à boire et à manger, crépitement des galettes et des beignets, tout ce qu’il convient de préparer.
56. Pendant ce temps, grand-roi, le vieux et la vieille tinrent conseil.
57. Crépitement des beignets, des douceurs et des galettes, ils préparèrent dix-huit sortes de mets dans neuf plats de feuilles.
58. Rani Rāut se met à causer avec son beau-père et sa belle-mère.
59. « Je ne mangerai que si vous me promettez de me donner ce que je réclame, sinon je ne mangerai pas. Non, je ne mangerai pas.»
60. « Eh ! Petit ! Qu’y a-t-il, qu’est-ce qui ne va pas ? » demandèrent le vieux et la vieille. « Tiens, ce festin est pour toi. Mange. Ensuite, si tu as quelque chose à dire, tu le diras. — Non ! D’abord, donnez votre parole, puis je mangerai. »
61. Ils promirent : « Quoi que tu demandes, nous te le donnerons ! ». Quand il eut bu et mangé, ils lui demandèrent : « Pour quoi es-tu venu ? Parle ! — Oh, ce n’est rien… Il faut me donner Bhimladā Udā. » 
62. « — Mais que dis-tu ! Ah ! Voilà que tu as parlé ! Maintenant, que faire, comment faire ? » Le vieux et la vieille étaient aux abois. O grand-roi, au moment de parler, [ils dirent ]: « Mais elle est promise à Meladev Kolāuli ! Qui rivalisera avec lui ? Ne fais pas ça, petit ! Ah ! Mais de toute façon, notre parole est donnée ! Alors puisque tu veux la prendre, prends-la donc ! ».
63. Voici de quelle manière on se mit à préparer le mariage…

68. Le cortège prend la route, sans poussière devant et sans boue derrière, les musiciens étaient fleuris comme le basinga au printemps.
69. Menant son cheval Alkawa Kalkawa à la bride sertie de joyaux, aux grelots sur sabots, Rani Raut s’en allait, grand-roi, cadaclop, cadaclop, cadaclop !
70. Après le départ, le cortège parvient à la maison. On mange on boit, on se lève, on s’asseoit{{6}}.
71. Et le lendemain, grand-roi, pour tous le jour soudain poignit et givra le givre, la longe à bestiaux se libéra et sur l’aire commune procédèrent les procès. La clarté se fit, les âtres s’allumèrent.

74. [Récitatif] O grand-roi ! En ce temps-là, de quelles couleurs est donc le cortège qui vient ? Les noceurs arrivent, bariolés de vermillon ! Il y avait des musiciens fleuris comme le printemps, il y avait le marié vêtu de jaune, il y avait la mariée vêtue de rouge !
75. Sans poussière devant et sans boue derrière, ô grand-roi, ainsi coloré venait le cortège.
76. Rani Rāut les rassembla tous, les chanteurs pour chanter, les danseurs pour danser, les musiciens pour jouer, et il se maria.
77. Fils de roi, pampre de concombre, aujourd’hui comme demain, demain comme après-demain, les jours passèrent, six mois, un an.
78. Pendant ce temps, dans la fratrie de Meladev Kolāuli, [on se disait] : «Allons bon ! [Jusqu’à présent] nous étions les seuls ! Qui est donc celui-ci qui débarque [en prétendant] mieux convenir que nous [pour ce mariage] ? La fille qui nous était promise, c’est Rani Rāut qui l’a prise ! Il s’appelle Rāut, [lui qui se prétend] aussi valeureux que nous, et ce Rāut a pris [notre] promise. »
79. Ils tinrent conseil et se dirent : « Ah ! Qu’à cela ne tienne ! ! Nous ferons des brochettes avec sa cervelle, nous lui arracherons la viande avec les ongles, nous en ferons comme du radis noir et du gingembre pilés ! Nous enfilerons ses sept côtes inférieures et ses sept côtes supérieures en un collier de quatorze côtes ! Puis nous pèlerons sa peau comme un rat ! »
80. Du soir au matin, ils répétaient. « Ah ah ! Avec ses sept côtes inférieures et ses sept côtes supérieures faisons-nous un collier ! »
81. Les jours passèrent, grand-roi. Bhimladā Udā était enceinte de six mois.
82. Un jour, Meladev Kolāuli harnacha son cheval Alkawa, à la bride sertie de joyaux, aux grelots sur les sabots, et il s’en fut, hue ! dia ! cadaclop !
83. A ce moment-là, Meladev Kolāuli fut stupéfait : « Jusqu’aujourd’hui, ici au fort de Kolāuli, aucun enfant d’un père, aucun frère ou cousin n’est venu comme ça… Or [voilà que] maintenant, on entend ce ‘hue ! dia ! cadaclop ‘ !»
84. A ce moment-là, [on se demanda] « Quel est ce fracas de sabots, quel est ce bruit de galop ? Qu’est-ce, qui est-ce ? Un hirsute aux crânes, un serviteur du narguilé, un yogi porte-flammes, un mendiant d’aumônes, qui est-ce, qu’y a-t-il ? »
85. Ils lâcha son [perroquet] : « Pars les chercher! », dit-il, et la fratrie de Meladev Kolauli arriva.
86. Rani Rāut était tout seul,  que faire, comment faire ? Que faire, comment faire, il se frotta les mains…{{7}} « Eh ! Jhagaḍuwā ! — Quoi ? — Rien ! Ah ! Meurs donc en buvant ton brouet ! Mon vieux, voilà que les ennuis arrivent et nous tombent dessus. Allez, debout ! Suis-moi ! »
87. Sa femme lui avait enseigné [un tour qui consistait à dire] : « Ah ! Grand frère ! » et lui avait donné un pot à latrines. « Çà et là, en chemin tu t’écarteras pour faire tes besoins et sur le pot à latrines, sur le pot à latrines tu verseras de la poudre. Tu diras :’Voilà que je saigne !’ et ainsi tu n’iras pas.»
88. [Et Rani Raut dira] : « Bon, ça suffit, [rentre chez toi]. » Et, alors que Jhagaḍuwā abandonne [en chemin pour] le fort de Kolauli, voici de quelle façon l’on va disant…

91. « Jamais de la vie !» [se dit Jhagaduwa]. [Jhagaḍuwā] apporta ses affaires, il apporta ses armes, il amena le cheval Kalkawa aux grelots sur les sabots, à la bride sertie de joyaux.
92. Après avoir tout harnaché, quand il fut temps de partir, [Rani Rāut] se mit en route en lissant ses moustaches, il se mit en route en faisant luire ses dents, il se mit en route en clignant des yeux.
93. Jhagaḍuwā part avec Rani Rāut. Après quelques pas dans un raidillon, [Jhagaḍuwā dit] : « Puisses-tu prospérer, beau grand frère, le ṭikā à ton front et l’étoffe à ton turban, mais je suis malade, je saigne, regarde ! » Il avait mis de la poudre de vermillon sur le pot à latrines [et il disait] : « Je ne peux pas [te suivre] ! ».
94. [Rani Rāut dit] : « Ah ! Flûte ! Puisque tu ne peux pas [me suivre] alors (…). Je chercherai quelqu’un d’autre. Ça ira !» Et, saisissant son cheval Kalkawa, Rani Rāut s’en va seul aux fêtes de Meladev Kolāuli.
95. Se faire par le rite un ami, maîtriser l’ennemi, manœuvrer une paire de bœufs mal assortis— ainsi, de nuit, Meladev Kolāuli tira une flèche qui manqua sa cible.
96. Il tira une seconde flèche vers ses pieds, que [Rani Rāut] esquiva. Il en tira une troisième, que [Rani Rāut] esquiva sur sa gauche. Mais combien un homme seul peut-il en esquiver ?
97. A part sa tante paternelle, il était seul. C’est alors que Meladev Kolāuli décocha une flèche qui, en faisant gidgidgidgid, atteignit Rani Rāut à la poitrine.
98. On lui coupa la tête et Rani Rāut mourut au fort de Kolāuli.
99. Quand il fut tué, on battit tambour de village en village : « Rani Rāut est mort. La gent de Meladev Kolāuli lui a coupé la tête ! »
100. Les veuves des villages [comme] les bourgeois des villes, il n’y en a pas un qui ne pleurât. Tous ensemble, ils se mirent à pleurer.
101. Les jours passèrent les uns après les autres. Les frères du clan de Meladev Kolāuli se rassemblèrent.
102. Bhimladā Udā était enceinte de six mois. Ils s’emparèrent d’elle et, avec un pilon, lui sortirent [l’enfant] de six mois, ils s’emparèrent d’elle et emmenèrent Bhimladā Udā.

104. La mère de Rani Rāut, Bairāgi Silā, aperçut le bébé en train de pleurer dans le buisson d’orties [et elle s’exclama] : « A qui es-tu, d’où viens-tu ? A qui est cet enfant qui donne de la voix ? A qui est cet enfant qui pleure ? »
105. « Si je te regarde de face, tu ressembles à Rani… Si je regarde ton profil, tu ressembles à Rani… A qui est-tu donc, orphelin de six mois ? »
106. Pour faire l’ordalie, la mère Bairāgi se met à parler. Voici de quelle sorte elle se met à dire…

108. « Si tu es vraiment le fils de mon fils Rani Rāut, alors avance sur ce linge doré. Si tu es le fils de quelque ennemi, n’avance pas. » La mère Bairāgi Silā énonça l’ordalie en parlant de la sorte.
109. [Le bébé] s’avança en pleurant. Sur le linge doré, l’avorton de six mois Sobhi Raut, sur le linge s’avança.
110. « Si tu es vraiment le fils de mon Rani, que du lait monte à mon sein et que dans l’étable vêle aussi ma vache Thāḍu ! » Elle énonça l’ordalie.
111. Et [le bébé] s’approche sur le linge doré,

112. Fils de roi, pampre de concombre ; les jours passèrent et l’enfant devint de plus en plus robuste.
113. Grand-roi, jour après jour, il jouait à l’arc lance-boulettes, il jouait au jeu des baguettes wānṭhiḍī.{{8}}
114. Parfois il renversait la natte d’Untel [où du grain était mis à sécher], parfois il renversait le van d’un autre [où du grain était mis à sécher]. Jour après jour, c’était : «Rends-moi le grain [perdu] ! Hein ! Rends-le moi donc ! »
115. [Les villageois disaient à Bairāgi] en grand surprise : « Meurs donc en buvant ton brouet ! De qui est cet orphelin que tu as ramené ? Hein ? De qui est-il ? »
116. « Quand il ne renverse pas le grain mis à sécher de l’un, c’est pour casser les jarres en terre de l’autre, ou pour battre les petits gardiens de bétail. Il n’arrête pas de faire du mal à quelqu’un ! D’où le sors-tu et pourquoi le ramènes-tu ici, cet orphelin ? » 
117. En ce temps-là, ô grand-roi, comme il ennuyait les gens de la maison, [ceux-ci lui dirent] : « Eh ! Toi ! Ta mère est veuve, et toi, tu es son fils{{9}} ! Et tu n’a [encore] tué personne, tu n’as pas consommé [la vengeance] ! [Qu’attends-tu pour] coupe[r] la tête de Meladev Kolāuli [en réparation pour] ton père ! Fais-en ainsi, toi ! Celui qui ne peut se venger de son ennemi, qu’il soit maudit, lui et sa descendance, pendant sept générations ! Celui qui ne peut se venger d’un ennemi [comme] le tien, qu’il soit maudit pendant sept générations ! »
118. « — Où cela était-ce, vers où cela était-ce ? En échange d’un van de riz, je vous en donnerai deux ! Pour une jarre de grain, je vous en donnerai deux ! Mais où mon père Raniyā a-t-il donc été tué ? Parlez ! »
119. Il se rendit à la plate-forme de repos. Les bardes Jheppoi et Ceppoi arrivaient en tirant — jyāppa jhuppa !— sur leurs pipes pour mendier au village.
120. Ils regardèrent sur la plate-forme de repos: c’était l’orphelin de six mois Sobhi qui était assis. Portant une pipe en terre aussi [grande] qu’un narguilé, les bardes Jheppoi et Ceppoi s’avancèrent en mendiant du tabac.
121. En voyant l’avorton Sobhi, [ils se dirent] : « Ah ! Si je regarde son nez, il ressemble à mon seigneur Raniyā ! De ce côté-là, si je regarde ses jambes, elles ressemblent à mon seigneur Raniyā ! Si je regarde le bout de son nez, il ressemble à mon seigneur Raniyā ! »
122. « Eh ! Toi ! Qui es-tu ? Meurs donc en buvant ton brouet ! Parle ! Tu as l’allure de mon seigneur Raniyā ! Que faire, comment faire ? Qui es-tu donc ? »
123. « — Personne… Je suis Sobhi Rāut, Sobhi l’avorton de six mois. — Ah ! Mon Dieu ! Quelle chance ! [se réjouirent-ils].  [Voici que] le datura de mon seigneur Rani a repoussé au fort de Kolāuli, te voilà ! Voilà qui est bon ! ». Et les bardes Jheppoi et Ceppoi s’en furent bien vite.
124. Les bardes Jheppoi et Ceppoi revenaient à sa rencontre matin et soir, ils amenaient leur tabac blond et leur tabac brun, ils arrivaient en le fumant.
125. Ils en tiraient lorsqu’ils étaient avec lui, ils amenaient leur tabac, ils arrivaient le soir en le fumant, ils arrivaient le matin en le fumant.
126. Il [disaient à] l’orphelin de leur seigneur Sobhi Raut : « C’est Meladev Kolāuli qui a tranché ton père Rani Rāut. Maintenant, il te faut prendre tête-pour-tête … »

130. Leur seigneur Sobhi Raut arriva aux fêtes de Meladev Kolāuli.

En ce temps-là, grand-roi, il harnacha son cheval Kalkawa à la bride sertie de joyaux, aux grelots sur les sabots, et, en faisant cadaclop, cadaclop, cadaclop, il arriva aux fêtes de Meladev Kolāuli.
131. O grand-roi ! Sur les hauteurs de Chatti Bichatti, il y avait des roitelets et des maharadjas réunis tant et plus dans la cour ; certains dansaient et chantaient ensemble par ici, d’autres par là.
132. Aux fêtes de Meladev Kolāuli, [on s’écria] : « Ah ! On a volé et mangé la galette que la reine a mis à rôtir !». Elle en mit une deuxième à rôtir, [Sobhi Raut] l’emporta et la donna aux ḍholī Jheppoi et Ceppoi. Elle en mit une troisième à rôtir, de même il l’emporta et la donna aux dholī Jheppoi et Ceppoi.
133. « Ca alors ! Bon Dieu ! » (…)
Aux fêtes de Meladev Kolāuli, [on s’écrie] : « Ca alors ! Bon Dieu ! » Les galettes les unes après les autres sont mises à rôtir puis se font voler.
134. On dit : « Mais que se passe-t-il, comment cela se fait-il ? C’est une histoire à dormir debout, ou quoi ? ».
135. [Sobhi Raut] vola les galettes autant qu’il y en avait pour les donner à ses bardes Jheppoi et Ceppoi. Ils se firent un sac de voyage et le remplirent.
136. Et le jour soudain de poindre, le givre de givrer, la longe à bestiaux de se libérer, et sur l’aire commune les procès de procéder. Les âtres s’allumèrent, la clarté se fit.
137. O grand-roi ! Les bardes Jheppoi et Ceppoi dirent: « Soit tu te caches, soit tu t’agites ! Meurs donc en buvant ton brouet ! Jusqu’à maintenant, il n’a fait que dormir ! Où diable est-il passé à présent ? »

140. La première galette épaisse, on demanda aux divinités où elle était passée, on compta et recompta, mais on ne put mettre la main dessus.
141.  « Meurs donc en buvant ton brouet, celui qui a emporté les galettes, où est-il passé, par où est-il parti ? »
142. Les chanteuses de bon augure étaient assises, les prêtres célébraient en chantant le Véda, les musiciens jouaient des percussions. On donne, dit-on, la première galette épaisse{{10}} aux brahmanes pour qu’ils l’emportent afin de faire le pujā. Là, cette galette fit défaut.
143. « Meurs donc en buvant ton brouet ! Où est-elle passé, par où est-elle partie ? Qui l’a pris, vers où l’a-t-il emmené ? Pèlerin de Bénarès, serviteur du narguilé, yogi porte-flamme, hirsute aux crânes, qui a fait le coup, hein ? »
144. Meladev Kolāuli [dit], grand-roi : « Qui a pris mon pain, par où l’a-t-il emporté ? »
145. Sobhi l’orphelin banda son arc avec une flèche. Tremblement de chien, tremblement de chat, frisson d’effroi ! La première partit en faisant gidgidgid, la deuxième aussi.
146. Mais il n’eut pas la chance [d’atteindre sa cible]. Les bardes Jheppoi et Ceppoi [se demandèrent] en se mordant la langue : « Que faire, comment faire ? »
147. Alors qu’il commençait à faire jour, après s’être bien demandé comment faire, ils frappèrent Melādev Kolāuli sur le front avec leur tambour-sablier et, pim, pam, poum, ils étendirent Meladev Kolāuli.
148. La foule fut stupéfaite : « Qui a frappé ? Comment a-t-on frappé ? Comment l’a-t-on tué ? »
149. Et on se mit à chercher, grand-roi : « Eh ! Orphelin ! Qui es-tu ? On dirait bien que tu emportes la tête d’un ennemi… Qui es-tu, que fais-tu ici ? »
150. Les bardes Jheppoi et Ceppoi s’avancent devant lui et mettent l’orphelin derrière eux. « C’est un orphelin Bhul, de la caste des équarisseurs. Il est venu ici après avoir tranché un veau. Venez voir le sang sur son corps ! Il n’a rien fait, le pauvre ! Laissez-le. »
151. O grand-roi ! L’orphelin s’échappa, et le sort du clan de Meladev Kolauli déchut.
