Should I tell the one about the hare?
—Mm. She knows one.
The hare and the jackal.
—Mm.
What the jackal said was,
"Now, ritual-brother, you and I—"
[Narrator backtracks:] That's not it. — they climbed up the slope, they walked
When he'd climbed up, [the jackal said,] "Oho, brother, where have you come from?
Let's exchange salutations.
Let's exchange salutations," he said.
"You have bowed to me, brother, long may you live!" he [the hare?] said.
"You have bowed to me, brother, now lets go for a walk together," he [the jackal] said.
"Go where, my friend? I'm tired, I can't go.
I can't go, I'm tired.
You go, brother," he [the hare] said,
"Oho, my brother made a ritual friendship, and now he won't go with me!
Why should you get tired? I'll put you on my back," the jackal said.
"What do you mean put me on your back, I'm not getting on."
"No, you must get on, brother, get on!"
They went steadily uphill.
They went up to the ridge.
When they had gone up to the ridge — it was sunny.
It was hot, so he [the hare] sat down and wiped his face like this.
The jackal thought: "He's chewing on his hands and feet, the jack— the hare!"
[The narrator explains:] He was eating siru, get it? Siru — it has a root underneath, the siru we cut for fodder.
The hare was eating siru-root.
"O, brother, what are you eating?" the jackal asked.
"Brother, I'm chewing on my hands and feet," he said.
So the jackal chewed on his own hands and feet.
"O, I'm done for!
Brother, I'm done for, but you — nothing happened with your hands and feet, they don't hurt you!"
What can I do, brother, I chewed on my hands and feet and nothing happened. I'm chewing away," he said.
"OK, chew on, then, chew on!"
"OK, brother, now get going, and take this bundle, too, please," [said the hare].
"Me take what bundle —?"
[interrupts to ask the researchers:] You're asking what "bundle" means?
You have shoulder-bags, we don't say that, we say "bundle".
Then he put the bundle on his back, and they went off.
Parched barley-flour — [to the researchers:] They sow barley. — They took the parched barley-flour.
The jackal took the parched barley flour to give it to him — to the hare.
They bound themselves in ritual friendship and they ate.
Then it [the flour] got into his [the hare's] eyes.
The hare went off into a field of finger-millet — [for the researchers:] finger-millet, it has round heads this big — finger millet.
When he went into the millet-field, [the jackal said] "Oho, my brother has started eating millet!
I'm going too, I'll just eat some too," he said, and he went over to the millet field.
The hare took off, he went away.
The millet-farmer pounced on the jackal.
He pounced on the jackal and tied him to a tree. He tied him up with rope and beat him severely.
He beat him with a big stick. "It's not me! My brother — the one who ate the millet — has taken off. It's not me!"
"It's you, whore's son, you came just now to my house— [correction:] to my field.
You ate the millet," he said. Right there he beat him until he was all swollen up, and then he hung him up on a tree.
What did the hare say when he came along? "Now you've gotten yours! Good for you, well done, well done!
Brother, you've put on weight, you've put on weight from getting beaten!"
Then, taking the jackal along behind, he brought a goat.
He brought a goat, and they went into a cave.
They went into the cave, and he said "Let's eat over there!"
They finished eating, and the hare ["jackal" seems to be an error — the narrator confuses the roles in this incident] made like a rat scratching the earth and covered up his bond-friend [with earth] —
He covered up the jackal ["hare" is an error] in the cave, and he himself slipped away.
[Explains:] "Slipped away" means "he escaped".
Then his [the jackal's] wife was in his house; [seeing the hare] the wife said, "My house— my husband didn't come, sister, call him!"
"O, he chewed on his hands and feet over there and died, your husband. How could he come?" [said the hare].
Go, and bring him back with you!" she said, and she [the sister] went.
When she went, [the jackal said] : "If you are my wife, grasp my hand and take me with you, otherwise let me die!"
"OK, I'll take you. Wait!" she said, and took his hand and brought him home.
She brought him home, and that night one son, one daughter, and those two stayed there.
They stayed, and they ate.
When they had eaten — now of course a jackal eats carrion…
He was quietly feeling around for his wife, to eat her.
"Is she dead?" he wondered.
She's alive, not dead.
He felt her like this.
"Hey, what are you doing like that?"
"I'm feeling for my wife — where are you?"
"Is it to eat me, or what? — why, you're really a nasty one!
I don't approve of a man like that!
Go, jackal, go! Get out, out!
Go to your name-brother's! Go!" she said.
He slammed the door.
He slammed the door, and he made a fire and set the house on fire, and she was burned up.
The wife was burned up, and the husband escaped and went off.
That's all there is to my story. Namaskar!
