japne Verb formed from jap. In "standard" Nepali, jap (or jāp) refers to an incantation that is quietly muttered or silently recited, one that is usually repeated over and over. However, Jājarkoṭī shamans use the term interchangeably with "mantar." Both words designate texts that are secretive yet recited aloud, for no shaman texts are truly "silent," while all require multiple repetitions to increase effectiveness.
