Note 271:

Karṇa Vīr regarded this set of mantars against fevers and poisons as among his most important texts. He recited them with a singsong tune, even when dictating them, and they have an entrancing repetitiveness that results in rather confusing story lines. The first text of the set explains the origins of fevers. The second treats an extremely common sinus condition known as "pinās," (Sanskrit: pīnasa) the result, as locals explain it, of a bone growing the wrong way in your nose, causing pain and making breathing difficult. Often, this nasal blockage is the consequence of a fever or a long-lasting flu. The third text treats poisoning. The fourth opens in exactly the same way as does the ashes text, by calling on the guardians of the four quarters to awake and then describing a wandering split-ear yogin who treats the many varieties of fevers that he encounters in the world.
