chedbhed A general way of referring to all the things that witches do. ched "An evil spirit; a troublesome person" (Turner 1980:201) and bhed "Mystery; secret; witchcraft."An interesting connection between witches and smallpox might be drawn from this phrase, since a bhedi is the traditional inoculation against smallpox, made from the pus of an open smallpox sore (a biphār). Administering this would cause bumps (māi) to appear, but these did not break open to form scars (kubhed).
