Note 155:

ālaṅ birā, mālaṅ birā ƒĀlaṅyānī and Mālaṅyānī are female spirits of the high ridges who drive people crazy (mentioned in V.1 for example). No one could explain exactly why they might be associated with the wooden seat of the shaman, or (in I.22 for example) with his dancing. However, the conjunct ālaṅgmālaṅg is used in local speech to mean "rushing about this way and that," and this, along with the popular idea that the shaman's seat trembles on its own, prompts my translations, "shaking, quaking."One shaman, Nar Siṅgh Kāmī, included ālaṅmālaṅ among the seven most important classes of forces, giving them a prominent place in his directions on what to do when one first decides to become a shaman (below), but he, too, could not provide any further information about them.Several shamans in Jājarkoṭ suggested that ālaṅ is the same as yel, a condition of "dullness," for which one shaman in the Bhujī Valley, south of Dhorpāṭan, had a recital to cast off (John T. Hitchcock, unpublished fieldnotes of 1967). None of them knew this recital, however, nor was I able to record it elsewhere. In Jājarkoṭ, the condition must be treated with the "Event of Barāh" (below).
