bāi (Variations include bāya, bayā, and bāyo.) Not recognized by villagers as a specific category of fevers. Listeners suggested that it formed a contrast pair with kharo, "heat," scorching fevers compared to chilling, shivering-producing fevers. Another suggestion, however, was that it was derived from baira, "outside," and meant fevers that seemed only skin deep. It might alternatively be derived from bāyu, "wind," or vāi, "bane" (see I.23.5, where both bāyo and bāya appear, and I.33.1 where the contrast is āyo/bāyo.)
