padubinī A "secluded one," who appears in the repertoire of every shaman with whom I have worked. This is a legendarily beautiful woman who never leaves her quarters, said never to use her feet; literally, "footless." When a local woman is mad at her husband, she will threaten to stay inside just like a "footless one." Here, the maddening tune that she plays on a Jew's harp causes the headache that the shaman treats. Possibly derived from padminī "A beautiful woman, along with citriṇī, śaṅkinī, hastinī, one of the four classes into which women are divided by erotic writers" (Turner 1980:363), though I could find no evidence that this system of classification was known in Jājarkoṭ.
